Kaluanni Gulch and Maakua Gulch are two
beautiful, narrow canyons on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.
In May of 1999, a large rock fall in Kaluanni Gulch killed
eight hikers and injured many more. In an ensuing lawsuit,
the state of Hawaii was found liable for their deaths
since the canyon is in Sacred Falls State Park and people
were allowed to hike in the canyon despite the known danger
of rock fall. To avoid future legal liability, the state
of Hawaii has permanently closed public access to these
outstanding canyons. We will never be permitted to enjoy
them in person, but perhaps we can gain some appreciation
of their beauty from the following web-sites
